Room 220, Saturday Evening

Zero refused to make a great big deal out of this. It was just a date. An anniversary date.

A one-year anniversary date.

Totally not a big deal. Really.

Which would be why she was redoing her hair for the third time as she waited for Peter to arrive.

Peter had never made it to a one-year anniversary. He was nervous. Very nervous. He feared this would mean more bad jokes than usual.

He knocked on the door. "Who's there?" he said quietly. "Banana." "Banana who?"

Dammit. The bad jokes were starting already.

"Just a minute!" Zero called. "Quick, Dmitri, out the window!"

Her bad jokes were even worse than Peter's, it would seem.

"Did you get a new bird?" Peter asked through the door. Dmitri would be a good name for a bird.

Oh, squall. Zero flung the door open. "No, Fish would take out any encroachers on his territory, don't you think?" She wasn't sure 'encroachers' was a word, but then this was Zero so it wasn't like she cared.

"Oh. Then it was another secret boyfriend?" Peter asked, stepping in to kiss Zero. "I just hope that he and Raul don't get into a fight."

Zero kissed him, then pulled back and said, "Don' worry about Raoul, he can take care of himself."

"Worry? I'd hit him myself if I could find him," Peter said. "He's a good hider."

"It helps that he's so short."

"I'll find him someday," Peter said.

There was another short being who Peter would have rathered not find under Zero's bed. It was looking at Peter's ankle. This triggered Peter's spider-sense. "Huh," he said, looking around.

Sadly, Zero did not have any supersenses that would have enabled her to detect the presence of this short being of evil. "Something wrong?" she asked.

The green-topped one had malleted many of his brethren. The gremlin would have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

"Something's a little weird in here," Peter said. He listened to his sense and got down on his hands and knees to check under the bed. Unfortunately, he put his hand a little too close and the gremlin was a little too quick.

"OW!" he yelled, pulling his bitten hand away. "What the hell?"

"What?" Zero asked, leaning down to peer under the bed. "What is it?"

That was when a gremlin leapt out and bit her leg. Fishnets didn't provide much in the way of protection. "Ow! Squallin' blighter!"

A moment later, the gremlin was ded from croquet mallet, but the damage was done.

When Peter realized what had happened, he knew that his time was short. "I would like to preapologize for anything that happens and I want you to know that I love you."

"Same," Zero said. "I love you too, hooskspider."

And then...she felt a strange sensation coming over her.



"Oh, Ricky, I think I really messed up this time!"

"Luuuucy," Peter said, suddenly developing a Cuban accent. "You got some 'splainin' to do!"

"Oh, now, Ricky, don't get angry!" Zero pleaded.

"There's no time to get angry anyway. I have a show tonight!" Peter said. "I have to get there now!"
