swerval_zero | Barnes & Noble in Alexandria, Saturday Afternoon (NFB due to distance)

As the group entered the store, they were greeted by a crowd of women, all waiting to meet Angelica Demesnes. Large tables held copies of all her books for those who hadn't brought their own, including the brand-new Crown Diamond. Zero gleefully snatched up a copy of her very own.

Angela found her way to the shelves of drama and poetry and was flipping through a Sylvia PLath collection.

"Now, I don't know you, but I saw you on the bus, so I feel like I should introduce myself." Jack grinned and leaned against the shelves. "Unless I've already met you and just don't remember."

"You have, but not since you got back," Angela said. "I'm Angela. I worked in the library with Parker?"

"Ahh, well, that's all a blur to me. Unfortunately. I don't know how I managed to forget someone as lovely as yourself." Jack offered her his hand. "I'm beyond charmed to meet you, Angela. Seeing as, at least from my side of things, it's my first time meeting you, shall we observe the formalities?"

Angela grinned, blushing a little. She held out her hand for him to shake. "I'm Angela Chase. Pleased to meet you, Mr. Harkness."

Jack shook her hand, then lifted it to kiss, smiling at her warmly. "And I'm beyond pleased to meet you, Ms Chase."

Angela felt giddy to her toes at the hand kissing. "So are you a big fan of the pirate-ninja thing, or are you just along for the ride?"

Jack grinned and released her hand. "Izzy gave me one to critique, and after that I had to meet the author. What about you? Are you a fan?"

"It's not my usual kind of thing, but I got kind of sucked into them when Zero was reading them in the library," Angela said. "They're very strange books."

"Extremely," Jack agreed enthusiastically, glad to find someone else who thought so. "Some of those things just aren't physically possible! That's what I want to ask her about. I don't know what sort of research she did, but it wasn't enough."

"What, like the thing with the hammocks and the servant boy?," Angela asked. "That seemed kind of improbable."

"Exactly! And, okay, yeah, some of the really difficult things I've actually done, but it was only with a lot of practice and planning." He shook his head sadly. "Someone could get hurt if they tried it at home. There really should be a disclaimer on the books."

"It could say, 'Do not use these as a guide'?," Angela suggested, blushing a little. "So do you do a lot of difficult things?"

Sometimes she had no idea why things came out of her mouth, but they did.

"Now that's a very good idea - maybe I should suggest it to her," he mused, trying not to grin at her blush. "Not so much difficult as...involved. I have a hammock in my room," he offered.

Jack laughed, looking slightly surprised, then intrigued. "I wasn't, but I guess I could if you were interested."

"NO!," Angela insisted. "Just kind of sounded like you were."

"I have a boyfriend."

And she really wished the earth would swallow her up, thanks.

Jack's smile softened. "He's a very lucky man. I was just using the hammock as an example of...involved things," he explained, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Not as a personal suggestion. So no harm done, okay?"

"Other than that I managed to really embarass myself," Angela said ruefully. "Sorry. So ... what workshops did you take this summer?"

"I took Constant Vigilance, which was fun, with a guy named the Doctor. And I scored a set of lockpicks from Stealth & Deception," he said, happy to change the subject, as embarrasing people was not high on his list of fun things to do. "Now, did I manage to miss you all summer, or were you away?"

"I was gone the first half," Angela said. "Second half I was here. Not sure how we avoided each other."

"I was kind of busy the last few weeks," he explained. "I didn't get out and about much. But that's pretty much done with, so I'm sure I'll be seeing more of you." Jack had to grin, and add, "Though not too much, or your boyfriend might get jealous.

And that got a completely genuine smile from Jack. "I'd like that. Maybe we could grab a coffee, or a piece of cheesecake, sometime? You could fill me in on all the things you remember about me that I don't. Because there's a lot missing."
