Barnes & Noble in Alexandria, Saturday Afternoon (NFB due to distance)

As the group entered the store, they were greeted by a crowd of women, all waiting to meet Angelica Demesnes. Large tables held copies of all her books for those who hadn't brought their own, including the brand-new Crown Diamond. Zero gleefully snatched up a copy of her very own.

((Due to Parker's connection woes, there will be no travel post. Come one, come all!))

Marlene frowned, and peered at Callisto very closely, from about four inches away, then authoritatively said, "Dorothy, I think we've insulted her. This is Deidre Storm, not Raphaella. She was on the cover of Passionate Promises of Penzance. You remember, she was wrapped around the guy who looked like Harrison Ford?"

"Oooo!" Dorothy actually clapped her hands. "Could you sign our copies? I adored that book. Tell me, how do you get your hair so shiny? And aren't you cold, dear?"

Parker tried to break in. "Ladies, I'm afraid you're making my friend uncomfortable." She really, really tried, but... "She's just here to support Angelica. Really."

Callisto shot Parker a look that suggested Marlene and Dorothy weren't the only ones lucky about her current lack of weaponry.

"Ladies," she ground out. "I'm afraid that the only people I've posed for know it's more than their lives are worth to try and sell the drawings to a tawdry smut publisher."

"Oooooo!" Marlene shivered. "You're great at that! I almost believe you're a barbarian princess!"

"Duchess, Marlene, duchess. Ignore her, she just reads the books for the clothing," Dorothy said. "But she's right, you *are* good. They should consider you if they do one of those telemovies."

"Mini-series."

"Ooo! A film!"

"Ladies, it's very premature to discuss these things," Parker said significantly. "And Deidre has a photoshoot in an hour."

Callisto's fingers itched and she wondered whether she could spin their deaths as an act of kindness to the human gene pool.

Not that Parker was fairing much better in her eyes. "I'm telling Addy to send that footage to Angel."

Parker stopped giggling, coughed, then said, "Right. Okay. Marlene, Dorothy? It's been great for Deidre to meet with the public, but seriously, she needs her rest. Tell Angelica how much you enjoyed this, okay?"

"Are you a model too, dear? You kind of have the legs that are on the cover of Satan Wears Versace--"

"NO." Parker glared at her. Marlene and Dorothy nodded knowingly, and Parker shot Callisto a glance. "Hey. I bet if I give you a pen, you can take them out in two moves?"

"Three." Callisto might have been looking at Parker while she said that.

Parker made a face, then turned back to Dorothy and Marlene. "Right. Good-bye. Good luck. Good hunting. And we'll tell that guy on the cover of... whatever, that you said hi."

"You get your rest, dear," Marlene told Callisto. "Your career won't last forever. Have fun with that for as long as those boobs last."

"Marlene!" Dorothy sighed and shook her head. "Seriously. It's just been lovely. Just remember us, the next time they ask you to stick a sword in the villain for the back cover, okay?" She turned and followed Marlene toward the coffee shop. "Such a nice girl," Parker could hear her say. "Not at all what you'd think of a barbarian countess as."

"Duchess!"

Parker facepalmed. "Okay. Anything I ever said about you fitting in here?... Still applies. But maybe not in this bookstore."

"Back home I could have killed them and no one would have stopped me," Callisto said wistfully.

"So you have something to look forward to, don't you?" Parker sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Come on. I'll buy you a mocha, and we can spike it while we mock the fangirls and wait for Zero to thwap Angelica."

"Alcohol, alcohol is good," Callisto nodded.
